Rare photo showing mortar bunker, minefield and approach to Plamu Mapu camp in Borneo. occupied by 40 Cdo in 1965. It shows some of the mortar crew (RM's) in the mortar pit. This was the site of the last major assault by the Indonesian army to capture or destroy one of the jungle camps. The paras fought off the assault and the camp was heavily bullet marked when we occupied it. I do not think another photo of this camp exists showing this the main approach to the camp.
- this monster was brought into camp. The first time I saw it was when I took this pik. The story goes that someone was out on a comms check prior to patrolling and this thing decided to go to sleep in the back of his wagon. It woke when he got back into camp and caused quite a stir, as you can imagine. The fellow cleaning it was the Navy medic with us (can't remember his name). Once it was cleaned up there was a massive queue to have photos taken with it.
- during jungle training in South Belize we were being give a demo of crossing a clearing in silence. The first chap at the clearing squatted down and surveyed the area, then waved others through. Each person 'through' him tried to communicate with him but, as it was a demo for students, he maintained his professionalism and ignored them. Once demo was over it was made clear to him that all the time he was squat there his bollocks had been inches away from the snake in the picture. I think it was a "fir-de-lance"? and quite poisonous. Of course being a cool and calm marine he went back to the area and attacked the thing with his parang'. I can't remember the guy in the picture with it but I think he was the one squating.
At this time of deep reflection, I send you probably the last photograph of Tom Collins, killed in action in February 1966. This was taken at Biawak before the last sorte into the Ulu.He’s still missed by his friends - Aye Stephan Flanigan
This was the very last day of the deployment and it was thought a good PR coup to play the national side at footy, we had just spent nearly 3 weeks in the jungle and were playing in a mixture of trainers, jungle boots and anything else we could get on our feet. It was slightly warm at nearly 40 degrees and we patrolled down the tunnel with our weapons which were guarded by the subs during the game. We tried to convince the subs to take out the stikers with their SA80's but they wouldn't. 14 1 was a good score all things considered.Joey Graham
