was commanded by Major Tom Hemingway USMC until the unit was deployed in Northern Ireland. It is therefore with much sadness that I read in September/October 2000 Edition of the Globe and Laurel that he had died suddenly of a heart attack on the 14th August aged 63 at Quantico, Virginia, USA. As the Globe & Laurel mentions he had been considered an outstanding prospect for high rank in the USMC 'on fast track to flag' but had retired suddenly in the summer of 1981 to pursue a career in a combined youth camp and religious group. I am sure that those of us, including those in my 3 troop picture, that served under his command will have fond memories of those times, prior to Northern Ireland, including his Morgan motor car, and would like to wish his wife Sarah and the four children, Laura, Becky, Elliot and Josh all the best for the future.

A Commando School Training Team on Dartmoor 1967/8. I have forgotten the Drill Instructor's name Ginge ? The Capt was attached from the Army! At that time several PWI's from Lympstone training teams, went to Mourmeion-le-grand near Reims in France, to assist the non combatants of 24 Brigade in they range work. We stayed in a French Foreign Legion Camp and at the weekends with the US Marine Guard in Paris. David Richmond and myself also went to Paris during the student riots of 1968. Whilst this photo was being taken Ray Lewis Labrador puppy was chewing his car to bits.
the phot was taken by the ships phot off Hermes while doing Eagle flights in a wessex over Oakhampton. All would have been well except for the fact that we had a lock in at the Plume of feathers untill 2 am the previouse night. Following a pussers breakfast at 6am we were litterally thrown around the hills of Oakhamton ranges in the parrafin parrot landing every now and then to assault some imaginary force. After the fourth such landing I got into a firing position and proceeded to blow chunks everywhere. the others while laughing started to follow suit and the ships phot had a field day. The lads on the pic are Scouse Sorrel, Taff Woodward, me Wally Noble 2nd Barfer, Craig Buckly and Jock Fisher.Andy Colborne.
