My Grandad WALTER (TOM) THOMAS is trying to find some old friends that
he served with whilst in the ROYAL MARINES 40TH COMMANDO MAY 1946 -
FEBRUARY 1960 His number was PO/X6624. He served aboard the GAMBIA for
around 2 ˝ years. Whilst he was on board there was another Marine
killed. His name was Paddy Bray and he was Squashed. Aboard the
VANGUARD for around 14 months. 1948 - 1949 approx. The Vanguard was due
to take the old Kind to Australia but the plans changed at the last
minute.
Also whilst he was aboard the Gambia it ran into a ship that was passing mail. The mail ship pulled ahead in front of the Gambia and they collided. She had to go back into "dry-dock" in Malta for repairs. He is particularly looking to trace Ronald (Tex) King who left at the same time as as Tom. Tex bought himself out and was last known to be planning to live in Australia. If you knew Tom and/or remember these events please contact me at Hediards@yahoo.com I will pass on all messages that I receive…… Once again, many thanks! |

I believe that this photo is of A troop, 41 Commando on
the beach on 6 June 1944. The standing officer is said to be LT Paddy
Stevens. I have reason to believe that the soldier (sgt) kneeling and
looking at the camera is my Grandfather. I would like to confirm this
and seek anybody's assistance.
Caption: Normandy, France. 1944-05-06. British soldiers crouch on the beach immediately after the "D" Day landing, waiting for a tank to pass by before they advance inland. Thanks, Stuart McKay Australia |
