LEST WE FORGET
By Andy O'Pray
My story is not that different from many others. On completion of
training, October 1959, only four positions were available in Cdo units, where we all wished to be. All others were for SQ training. There being only two positions for HW training, thinking that this must be a very sought after SQ, I volunteered. You can stop laughing now !!! That choice directed the rest of my career. The story I wish to be remembered is that of a fine young man, Marine Bewley. Marine Bewley was a member of X Company, 45 Cdo RM. While serving in Northern Ireland in 1977, during his tour he was unfortunatley killed by a sniper.
Such was the regard that the company and unit held for Marine Bewley, that the cinema in HMS Condor was named after him. Some will remember him, however, to all present and future Royal Marines, who do not. When you see the name Bewley above the cinema door, that name belonged to a young man who was the epitomy of a Royal Marine.
From his ex Company Sergeant Major.
